Captain Marvel is the studio's first female-lead AND female directed superhero fil m. Director Anna Boden who worked alongside Ryan Fleck did a good job delivering a different kind of superhero film.
If you take a look at all the Marvel superhero origin films, we saw them before they had powers and how they got it. In Doctor Strange's case, we saw him literally learn his powers and way beyond. Here in Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers/ Vers/ Avenger already knows she's capable of big things. So instead of the long introduction, the film jumps right in action.
Yes, some people think this is quite underwhelming and wanted a stronger movie. But you have to see the Cinematic Universe as a whole. Since this was released after the devastating events in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and towards the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), it is only right for the last solo superhero film to have a different approach before the end game. BTW, do not dare compare Marvel Studios' first female-lead and female-directed superhero film. Every woman is different but they are all great and strong.
Moreover, most of the mightiest superheroes have fallen and half of the earth's population has been wiped out. The audience has to be assured that another powerful Avenger is coming confirming Nick Fury's last action.
The way I see it is Captain Marvel is the preparation we need and the bridge that ties all connections and cosmic lore. You see, I'm also an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan. The series tapped on several events from the MCU. With Captain Marvel, they were able to show how S.H.I.E.L.D was after their encounter with the Axis powers and HYDRA in World War II which led to the agency's foundation. Not only that, but the film also showed us how they operated before all the cloaking and I.C.E.R. technology.
It's also worth mentioning that Captain Marvel bridges the gap in the history of The Tesseract which is also called the Cube. This is the crystalline cube-shaped containment vessel for the Space Stone, one of the six Infinity Stones.
But honestly, even if you don't follow The Infinity Saga or the series Captain Marvel is still a good film that offers cosmic fun. Pretty sure when they show this on cable TV, you will enjoy it more especially since we've reached the end by then. IMDb: 8/10
