Secrets of the Sea House by @elisabeth04liz

By Pamelascott

Scotland, 1860. Reverend Alexander Ferguson takes up his new parish, an isolated patch on the Hebridean island of Harris. His time there will change his life, but the Sea House, on the edge of the dunes keeps its silence long after Alexander departs. More than a century later, Ruth and Michael buy the grand but dilapidated building for the family they hope to have. But their dreams are marred by a shocking discovery.

I haven't read the author before but stumbled across some of her books which sounded very good by accident. This is an excellent book. Firstly, as an audiobook it's of a very high quality. The narrators do a top job. I could have listened to them for hours. The chapters are short so I could listen to quite a lot each session. As for the story, I loved it as well. The book is set in a remote island among a somewhat isolated community. The setting is brought to life and I felt like I was really there, observing everything. This is a book about selkies and mermaids, myth, legend, love, loss and in some instances, the darker side of living in an isolated community. This book ticks all of the boxes for me. I found it fascinating, gripping, sad and disturbing at times. I look forward to reading more by the author.
