Seating Arrangements at the Wedding..and Other Nightmares
This had to be the single worst job of planning my own wedding.  Seating arrangements!! Two hundred people invited to the wedding.  One hall venue to accommodate everyone.  A thousand of combined attitudes, resentments and grudges all being told to me by my mother who was only willing to explain each and every dilemma.  Yes, my wedding planning was starting to be less enjoyable than slamming my fingers in a car door.  A seating arrangement had to be done...this is the way we did it back then.

So when my daughter got engaged, this vivid memory came flashing back like a bad case of hemorrhoids and poison ivy combined.  To make matters worse...her father and I are newly divorced.  So unfortunately we have been an on going play of War of the Roses.

I knew this was going to fall on me.  I needed to set the tone and the pace on how this was going to work.   Never did I want my daughter to be sitting at a round table piecing names together around a wedding table chart only to find there was no one who liked Aunt Rosie (we do not have an Aunt Rosie the name has been changed to protect the innocent.)   I tossed and turned thinking of how this cousin couldn't sit next to this aunt...and the nights became longer and longer.  Let's face it...families come with baggage.  I decided to suck it up and not make this a long and laborious process for my daughter...the current bride.
My daughter and I are opposites but in more ways than she would care to admit we are rooted deeply in the same principles.  I knew on some wave length she had considered the different personalities that were amongst the list of invitees.  So one day, when we were driving somewhere together... alone ...I decide to approach the subject.  And I was shocked.....

There was more to come...there would be no seating arrangement...yup...you heard me right.  No Seating Arrangements.  In her mind...everyone was a grownup and could work it out.

But there was even better news.  The families would have the opportunity to sit amongst each other instead of his family to the left and her family to the right with friends in the middle.  I liked this idea.  I just wondered how we were going to relay this idea to the more than 150 people on the list.  And this is what she decided on....

So for all you mothers who like to take on more than your fair share of the load...I learned something that day in the car....we raised good daughters...maybe we should listen once in awhile.
