Samai Ven Pongal / Millet Ven Pongal

Millets like samai, kuthiraivali and varagu can be used to make ven pongal or kaara pongal. I have made van pongal using samai and it was awesome as well as healthy. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients :
Samai (little millet ) - 1/2 cup
Moong Dhal - 2 tbsp
Water - 2 cup
Pepper - 1 tsp
Asofaditida - pinch
Salt - to taste
To Temper :
Oil / Ghee - 1.5 tbsp
Jeera- 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Green chilli - 1
Cashew - 5 to 10
Method :
1.Add moong dhal, samai, pepper, asofatido and salt to the cooker along with water and cook it for 6 minutes in simmer after whistle.

Samai Ven Pongal / Millet Ven Pongal3. Add the tempered ingrediends to the cooked samai and serve with cocnut chutney or sambar.

  • You can replace samai with kuthiraivali or varagu
  • You can add finely chopped ginger during temper for a spicy pongal.
  • If you like your pongal runny add more water to it.
