Root 31 Eatery sits pleasantly in Pittsford Plaza, replacing what used to be Colie’s Café. Rebranding itself as a modern cafe and eatery; root31 specializes in locally sourced, organic, and sustainably sourced ingredients. An unpretentious, modern, and simple facelift gives root31 a slightly elevated fast casual appeal. Patrons have the ability to dine in or take out, my recent visit saw me dining in on a very hot and humid Sunday afternoon armed with my trusty paperback. I ventured out after reading about the rebrand and reopen in the D&C and wanted to check out the new place after seeing “gluten free” on the sandwich menu. As a years long celiac, the concept of sandwich is slightly elusive since adequate gluten free bread outside of my bread pan and oven is hard to come by. With our summer temps skyrocketing well into the 90’s, the idea of baking bread just hasn’t been at the top of my to do list; especially after leaving my retail bakery earlier this year. Sometimes all I want is a hearty yet healthy sandwich without all the hassle.
Root 31’s menu consists of your standard café fare with an assortment of wraps, salads, pizzas, and quesadillas. After a moment of indecisiveness, I settled on the Chicken Ceasar wrap without croutons. With a price tag of $8.25 and taglines such as sustainable, organic, and fresh I was expecting a heartier and homemade gluten free wrap. However, the tender, moist, and flavorful fresh grilled chicken made up for the out the package (yet warmed) wrap. A side of chips and a pickle completed my wrap; which left me mainly satisfied.
The waitstaff and chefs were friendly and diligent in their preparation of my lunch. They made sure that they accounted for concerns of cross contamination by changing gloves and making sure that surfaces and grill were wiped down before preparing my meal. In addition to offering a gluten free wrap, the eatery has gluten free pizza dough, salads, and a menu that labels the options that can be made gluten free.
I’m not sure that I’ll be running out to Root 31 anytime soon, but when visiting Pittsford Plaza in the future, it’s nice to know that there is an eatery that has tasty lunch centric options that are celiac safe.
