In a groundbreaking moment for inclusivity and representation, Rikkie Kollé has become the first openly transgender contestant to win the title of Miss Netherlands. Kollé’s victory on Saturday at the AFAS Theater in Leusden means she will go on to represent her country in the upcoming Miss Universe competition later this year.
Kollé took to Instagram after her win, writing, “I did it! I made my community proud and showed it can be done.” The post featured the light blue, light pink, and white-striped transgender flag emoji.

She described herself as a “victory” in a video posted on Instagram last month. She expressed the pride and sense of achievement that she has gained through the journey from bravely facing the challenges of being a little boy to standing tall as a strong, empowering, and confident trans woman.
She wrote, “Never forget that we can do this together, you’re not alone on this planet. Never stop dreaming of being your ultimate and confident YOU! Never let someone tell you what’s good for you because the only thing that matters is that you become the best version of yourself.”

Rikke, who comes from Breda was crowned on stage at just 22 years old. The crown was presented by last year’s Miss Netherlands, Ona Moody. Kollé received her sash from the reigning Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel.
If Kollé goes on to win Miss Universe, she will make history as the first trans woman to wear the prestigious tiara. The Miss Universe pageant has allowed transgender participants since 2012. Angela Ponce from Spain who participated in 2018 was the first openly trans contestant.
Another milestone may be achieved this year if activist Daniela Arroyo González becomes the first openly trans woman to win Miss Universe Puerto Rico. She too will advance to the Miss Universe competition on winning. 90 women from around the world will participate in the Miss Universe pageant in 2023.
