RICE BOWL KUTTANAD TURNING INTO GLOBAL FARM HERITAGE SITE
Kerala's 'rice bowl' Kuttanad, has potential to become a global farm heritage site. It is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried out below sea level.
Press Trust of India (PTI) reports the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) have a plan to establish the place as an agri-heritage site for it’s below sea-level agrarian method. The main reason for this is because of a unique farming method practiced in Kuttanad.
This heritage programme mainly aimed for  setting up of a natural history museum, a center for rice germplasm and a research and training center for below sea-level farming.
The center for rice germplasm, planned in Mankombu, will to save all available varieties of seeds and the rice research station in Kumarakom will facilitate training programmes on unique farming techniques.
