Review: Thai Rainbow, Lichfield

The latest place we ventured to on our discovery of more local eateries, was Thai Rainbow in Lichfield.

This Thai restaurant stands right alongside another Thai in Lichfield, Ma Ma Thai which we also visited recently and enjoyed. Nothing like a bit of head to head competition!

I’ll dive straight in with the starters. Between the two of we decided to share a few things. The Chicken Satay, Vegetarian Spring Rolls and the Thai Favourite Salad (chicken and prawn slad with a spicy Thai dressing).

The chicken satay had a good flavour, and nice peanut dipping sauce, but the meat was overcooked which let it down a lot. The spring rolls were nice –  a good crunch to them and flavoursome. I wasn’t keen on the salad unfortunately, again overcooked proteins and it really was quite bland, no kick to it at all.

For the main course I went for the Chicken with a sweet and sour chilli sauce. Lee had the Chicken & Vegetables with Cashew nuts (apologies, I cannot remember the Thai names and there’s no online menu to look them up). We both accompanied the mains with rice, egg fried for Lee and Jasmine for me.

Again I found my main over cooked, a real shame. The flavour of the sauce was pleasant, but nothing special. I would have like more or a chilli flavour again, and it was purely sweet rather than sour. Lee’s main was better, but it didn’t wow him. The rice was cooked very well.

The meal on the whole was a disappointment, although the spring rolls were a highlight. To top it off we ordered a second round of drinks when the main courses came, which never arrived and then they tried to charge us for them on the bill (which they did rectify when pointed out) but with no apology.

Maybe we just chose badly, or they were having a bad evening, but unfortunately one of the few places that won’t get on to our return visit list. It may still be worth you giving it a ago, they actually get pretty good reviews on trip advisor…but for us, the Thai next door wins hands down!
