One of the latest openings in Birmingham City Centre is Pure Bar and Kitchen. And judging by the crowd at 5pm on Friday evening its already a raving success. It is the brainchild of the guys behind Purity, a brewery that has gone from strength to strength since it opened. I’m not a fan of craft beers myself, being only an occasional lager drinker, but Lee loves their stuff. UBU being one of his faves.

He tried the Longhorn IPA as well as UBU and I quite enjoyed the Unlawless lager as well.

We were in a bit of a quandary over what to eat, as we were off to a wine tasting later on and we knew there would be a few nibbles there, so we didn’t want a full three course meal. Luckily for us, the way that Pure’s menu is set out allowed us to order a few ‘small plates’ which was great.

There was lots to choose from, including some yummy looking bar snacks. We went for the Scotch Egg with Beer Ketchup, Mini Fish & Chips, and a Little Gem Salad with Anchovies between us.

The Scotch Egg was just teetering on the edge of being perfect ( the yolk was just starting to set) but had a really good flavour and the beer ketchup was good and a nice bit crunch from some little matchsticks of potato underneath. I could find no fault at all with the salad – charred lettuce, plump anchovies and a delicious dressing or the fish and chips, which came with some creamy mushy peas and a tangy tartare.

We were craving something sweet so dove back in for some deserts. I went for the Mad Goose Waffles with Malt Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce which was a huge portion but really hit the spot. Lee had the Apple Pie with Oatmeal Stout Custard, good pastry, a not too sweet filling and a good hit of stout from the custard.

We really liked the food, and thought the whole place a nice concept and well executed. For me I might avoid eating at that time again – the hum of the after work pre weekend crowd was a little much for me, but I will definitely be back again soon.
