Review: Due or Die by Jenn McKinlay Description (from cover):
'What is the original meaning of the word clue?*
Answering tricky reference questions like this one is more than enough excitement for library director Lindsey Norris. That is, until another murder is committed in her cozy hometown of Briar Creek, Connecticut, and the question of who did it must be answered before someone else is checked out--for good.
Carrie Rushton, the president of the Friends of the Library, has been accused of murdering her husband. The evidence is stacking up against Carrie, but neither Lindsey nor the Briar Creek crafternoon club is buying it.
When a nor'easter buries the small coastal town, the police are too busy digging out the locals to investigate the murder. With the help of her crafternoon friends and an abandoned puppy they name Heathcliff, Lindsey has to solve the question of who murdered Mr. Rushton before the killer closes the book on Carrie...
*A ball of yarn or thread.'
My thoughts:
If you add a book-themed mystery, a puppy, a snowstorm and a murder together you get a pretty fabulous cozy mystery. If you are looking for a good cozy mystery this is the book to pick up. I immensely enjoyed reading the first in this series, Books Can Be Deceiving, and I couldn't wait to read this one. I was not disappointed. It actually was a coincidence that I picked this one up to read today as it features a blizzard and where I live we got some snow today. Snow here is rare and we got close to 5 inches or so and it was quite nice to read about a blizzard while it was snowing outside. Not quite blizzard conditions, but still quite coincidental.
I love this series because it features something that I love very much: books and the library. Lindsey Norris is the library director for the small hometown library in Briar Creek, Connecticut, where she knows the patrons by name and by favorite genres. Quaint Briar Creek has once again had a murder in its midst and Lindsey cannot stay away from investigating who wanted Mr. Rushton dead and why. She noses around and asks questions of the other townsfolk and is determined that the innocent shall not be wrongly convicted. She uses her wit, her love of books, and a cute little stray puppy to solve the murder before she or someone else ends up the next victim.
A very quick read that was delightful from page one. It's like McKinlay knows all the ingredients I love in my cozy mysteries and blends them together to create a fabulous read. I can't wait to pick up the next in this series, Book, Line and Sinker and actually plan on reading it right now. I think that this series has a lot of potential and I am looking forward to reading future installments. A must read for book lovers and cozy mystery lovers and is absolutely perfect for a quiet, snowy winter day.
