Revamping A Living Room

By Bidsbypros @bidsbypros

Have you ever walked into one of your rooms and wondered what the hell you were thinking of? I have and indeed I felt this way about my entire house. My bedrooms were successfully revamped and brought into the 21st century but my living room was still a pathetic apology for interior décor and a monument to errors of judgement. It needed to change but where was I to start?

Delaying the Inevitable

After a few weeks of procrastination I suddenly jumped to it and started to completely gut the room. There was, after all, nothing worth keeping and so I attacked every surface with gusto. The unpleasant textured finish on the ceiling was removed, the dated wallpaper removed and the dado rail ripped off without ceremony. I now had a completely devastated space and an urgent need for a plasterer.

Blank Canvas

Fortunately a plasterer was available more or less immediately and after one day of disruption I had a space that was the perfect blank canvas. I resolved that this time I should take more care over my choices of decor. I am no design guru and so the end results were unlikely to be award winning but I felt that I could at least manage to create a space which was not a total embarrassment by the year 2020.

Looking Forward

I also had to keep one eye on the future. If I want to sell this house at any time it needs to have universal appeal and so keeping it simple and relatively neutral was definitely the way forward. A fresh white ceiling was, therefore, complemented by inoffensive light beige walls which looked fresh with the newly installed oak flooring. Rustic oak cabinets and brown leather sofas gave the room a modern but homely look. My living room was now blissfully more Scandinavian chic and simplicity than a 1980’s homage but then I was struck by terrible procrastination.

Indecision

I needed curtains, cushions and some art to complete the room but struggled to decide which ones to choose. Usually a decisive shopper and with my new room almost complete I had fallen at the last hurdle. As I write this I still have empty windows, bare walls and no soft furnishings and I really must get on with it. It is the sheer breadth of choice that has foxed me. After viewing a myriad of fabrics and accessories my mind has been boggled and I can’t make up my mind which accent colors to feature. My original intention was to go with burnt orange and metallic elements but I have found myself distracted by some gorgeous faux fur accessories and brown striped curtains.

One of these days, and it had better be soon, I will make up my mind and install the finishing touches that will complete my new room. It has to be said that it is already a major improvement on what went before and in the absence of the curtains the whole neighborhood is getting a bird’s eye view of proceedings. It is good job that they can’t see my home office which will be the next project after I have made up my bloody mind!
