Japan is one of my favorite countries, this is why I keep returning. For my most current trip, I made sure to include Himeji Castle in my itinerary.

Himeji Castle
This feudal castle is one of the best preserved in the country and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you get closer to the fortress, you will already notice its elegance and grandeur. Its white and grey exterior will grab your attention and make you stop to just admire it for a while.
Himeji is one of the 12 castles that was not devastated by natural disasters, fire or wars throughout its history. The castle underwent renovation a few years ago but is now open to the public. The complex is around 4 centuries old.
The serpentine walkways and walls prevent or at least slow down a potential siege from enemy forces.
The interior of the castle is very minimalist, there isn't much inside compared to the palaces I've been to in Russia and India where royal families and their imperial court exuberantly display their wealth. The topmost level of the main keep provides sweeping 360 degree views of the surroundings.
Kokoen Garden
After taking several pictures of the castle I decided to go to the nearby garden.
The Japanese garden is a great place for a leisurely stroll. There are nooks and crannies where you can sit down, relax and clear your mind of whatever it is that is bothering you.
I went during autumn and the colors were beautiful. The simple yet beautiful garden typifies the Japanese aesthetic.
How to Get to Himeji Castle
The castle is easy to reach from Osaka. If you have a JR Pass or Kansai Thru Pass, you can reach this attraction by train. The fastest way to get here is to take the bullet train or the rapid service train, a ticket may cost up to JPY3950+++ per way. Once you reach Himeji Station, you can walk to the castle, take the bus for around JPY100 or a taxi for JPY650.
Entrance Fee: JPY1000 just for the castle and JPY1040 including the garden.
