Daniel Defoe is well commemorated in Stoke Newington. As well as his plaque – pictured here – there was the Daniel Defoe Pub and the Robinson Crusoe Gate remains at the local Clissold Park.
A variety of commemorations for a rich and varied life.
As a writer Defoe he is widely credited with popularizing the novel in England. His CV also boasts periods as a pamphleteer, a spy, a merchant, convict. This last he shares with one of his most famous creations Moll Flanders, who was also an inmate of Newgate Prison.
