Outdoor Moss Candle Orb’s

I stocked up on embroidery hoops last fall with intentions of putting them to crafty use whenever the inspiration hit me. Well, I’ve been in a mossy mood and thought that the garden could use some hanging lanterns of the green sphere variety.

Here’s how I came up with my Moss Candle idea….

A very simple process really…just turn the two hoops at a right angle to each other and tie in place. I have been using this green yarn for all my mossy projects lately, it blends perfectly.

I just take handfuls of moss and scrunch it around the hoops wrapping with yarn as I go. You will hear me say this again and again in all my moss tutorials…. I harvest the moss from my own yard, why people blast it with chemicals and kill it is beyond me. Use it!

Next I took little jam mason jars, wrapped them with wire and suspended them so that they sat at the bottom of the orb. In my tutorial I used 8″ hoops, but if you used larger ones, you may be able to have the jars hang in the center.

I have mine sitting on the bottom of the 8″ moss candle spheres for fire safety reasons. Right now the cool drizzly weather is keeping the moss moist, but as we move into summer, the moss will dry out and I don’t want the flame to be to close to the moss.

**Use caution, do not leave unattended, burn only small tea-lights in appropriate jars or fire proof votive holders, use at your on risk***

Even without the candles they look amazing hanging from the trees. You could easily turn these into natural looking bird feeders as well!

Well, that concludes another Mossy Garden Art Project…be sure to check out my other creations.
