Oh My Quirky Hong Kong! A Photo Diary

By Juliet Siu @Lacenruffles

Looking beyond the concrete boxes and the explosive neon lights in Hong Kong, there’re always something fresh and quirly that catch me eyes every time I pay a visit to my hometown. Is it the mouth-watering dumpling from that Michelin star restaurant,  or Mickey and Minnie in their Chinese costumes? You’ll be excited to know to capture the quirkiness of this vibrant, fast-paced city, you don’t have to spend a cent or be in the queue. Follow my photo diary and check out where I discovered my quirky Hong Kong, around the corners of the most unexpected places…

Meet ‘Cream Bro’: The Newsstand A-list Cat

Quirky Hong Kong: Cream Bro
Quirky Hong Kong: Cream Bro

Cream Bro is yet another star made born under the power of social media buzz. This mascot of a tiny newsstand in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, has earned himself over 150K Facebook followers, mainly due to his hysterical look, a massively overweight body, and the fact that he was once abducted and has gone missing which has stimulated thousands of shares of the Facebook post before he eventually returned to the newsstand a little bit more than a week after. These days, you really have to try your luck to be able to spot this feline celebrity. He spends a lot of his time in his ‘private residence’ at the back of the store, and when he’s up and around, he gets his ‘personal assistant’ watching his whereabouts to make sure he’s safe and happy with the amount of attention and camera flash he gets every day.

Can’t get enough of Cream Bro? For around US$40 you can bring him home and to your bed with this cushion made to the same measurement as Cream Bro, and of course, in his most curvy and sexiest body shape.

Get your photo with this Garfield look-alike celebrity at South Seas Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon.

Wear Your Cat On A Clutch

Quirky Hong Kong

I’m simply in LURVE with this pussy cat 3D print clutch! Do you feel that you can’t part with your pets every time when you leave home? Why don’t you wear your pets, literally. What’s even better is that these clutches are made of ec0 plastic for those who’re fashionably green at heart. Find them at the Olympian City shopping mall.

Street Style Alert 1: The Zoo

Quirky Hong Kong

If you feel a little bit bored with the same old animal trend in fashion every autumn/ winter season, why don’t you take this street style to the next level and create your boldest, wildest zoo-themed look? I’m talking about pairing your sheep skin UGG boots with bear print tights, and a 3D duck print backpack. Now this style is so fierce that are sure to turn heads on the streets. Note: no animals were harmed in the making of this outfit.

Street Style Alert 2: B For Big Bird

Quirky Hong Kong

What else could you say? All I felt like was to walk up to this lady and ask – Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?

Bruce Wayne Wears Chocolate

Quirky Hong Kong

This local fashion chain Chocolate claimed the impeccably presented Bruce Wayne wears the suits they make. From his fame, his empire to the Cat Woman, Bruce Wayne seems to have it all, yet they’re all money-can’t-buy dreamy items. At the store, apparently you can steal Bruce Wayne’s style for under US$100, how could you resist?

So tell me Dear Reader, where do you think is the quirkiest city in Asia? Have you seen anything quirkier than these during your recent travel? Share with me in the comments below!

:)

Until next time x

Juliet
