Statue of Liberty Dedication Day-- On this date in 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty as a gift from the people of France on what is now known as Liberty Island in New York Harbor. National Chocolates Day
- Chocolate was first manufactured in the United States at Milton Lower Mills, near Dorchester, Mass., in 1765. About 1876, M. D. Peter of Vevey, Switzerland, perfected a process of making milk chocolate by combining the cocoa nib, sugar, fat, and condensed milk.
St. Jude's Day
- St. Jude, the saint of hopeless causes, was martyred along with St. Simon at Persia, and their feast is celebrated jointly. St. Jude was supposedly the brother of Jesus and, like his brother, a carpenter by trade. He is most popular with those who attempt the impossible and with students, who often ask for his help on exams.
Donner Party Famine
- Oct 28, 1846–Apr 21, 1847. The pioneering Donner party, a group of 90 people consisting of immigrants, families, and businessmen led by George and Jacob Donner and James F. Reed, headed toward California in 1846 from Springfield, IL, in hopes of beginning a new life. Indian attacks and winter weather, which forced them to interrupt their journey, led to famine and outright cannibalism, which took their toll on members of the party, whose numbers dwindled to 48 by journey’s end.
First Woman US Ambassador Appointed
- Helen Eugenie Moore Anderson became the first woman to hold the post of US ambassador in 1949 when she was sworn in by President Harry S Truman on this date. She served as ambassador to Denmark.

- One of radio's favorite comedians, Jack Benny made the transition to favorite TV personality with this situation comedy–variety show in 1950.
