There's been a lot of talk recently about whether the current crop of Democratic candidates can beat Donald Trump. Some are worried that a candidate of the left will be nominated, while others are worried that a moderate will be nominated.It has resulted in two new candidates entering the race -- Deval Patrick and Michael Bloomberg.
This is not helping. The new candidates were not needed, and the current crop of candidates are all good. Any of them would make a much better president than Donald Trump.
President Obama understands this, and a couple of days ago he gave Democrats (and their donors) some advice. He said:
“Everybody needs to chill out about the candidates but gin up about the prospect of rallying behind whoever emerges from this process.”
“The field will narrow, and there’s going to be one person, and if that is not your perfect candidate and there are certain aspects of what they say that you don’t agree with and you don’t find them completely inspiring the way you’d like, I don’t care. Because the choice is so stark and the stakes are so high that you cannot afford to be ambivalent in this race.”
“I’m always suspicious of purity tests during elections. Because you know what? The country’s complicated.”
“This is still a country that is less revolutionary than it is interested in improvement. They like seeing things improved. But the average American doesn’t think that we have to completely tear down the system and remake it. And I think it’s important for us not to lose sight of that.”
