This easy dessert is ready in less than 30 minutes and is great for holidays, birthday celebrations, brunches, or just whenever you have a sweet tooth! This is the kind of pizza that will wow your guests and that kids will beg for over and over again - I mean who doesn't like chocolate pizza?

We first had banana pizza at our favorite Italian restaurant, and once I figured out how to put this pizza together, we couldn't get enough. And the best part about this recipe is that you can save the chocolate spread for other homemade Nutella recipes!

🍌 Are Bananas Good On Pizza?

Bananas on pizza might sound strange, but they are absolutely perfect on a sweet pizza. The creaminess of bananas is mixed with chocolate and placed on a neutral-tasting crust that creates a dessert pizza that is pleasant to eat any time of the day, but especially whenever you're craving fruit and pizza at the exact same time.

For a savory pizza, I probably wouldn't recommend bananas, but apples, pears or even pineapple all taste great on savory pizzas! You can add basically anything to a pizza!

🍫 What Is Nutella Pizza?

This Nutella pizza recipe is pizza made with a homemade chocolate hazelnut spread rather than savory tomato or béarnaise sauce. Instead of tomatoes, spinach, cheese, and other savory ingredients, we added a sweet homemade Nutella, ripe banana, and other sweet ingredients to make this pizza as tasty as possible.

Another version of Nutella pizza is made with melted mini marshmallows, crushed graham crackers, cream cheese, and fresh strawberries: this is known as a strawberry Nutella pizza.

Dry Ingredients

Flour: We like to use whole wheat flour for the pizza base because it's less processed than all purpose flour and has more fiber and protein, but still makes for a soft pizza dough. For best results, make sure you properly measure the flour (spoon and level) or the pizza may not turn out the way it should.
Baking Powder: Use your favorite organic baking powder to help the pizza crust rise!
Cinnamon: Warm and rich ground cinnamon is used to give this pizza an extra touch of flavor.
Sugar: Coconut sugar is a refined sugar-free option for this pizza. We usually always have some in the pantry and is fairly low on the glycemic index.
Salt: We like to use pink Himalayan salt to make sure our bodies are getting the minerals they need.
Hazelnuts: You will want to roast some hazelnuts in addition to crushing some for the topping so make sure you have enough!
Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is what we like to use because it is simple and turns into the most delicious chocolate spread.
Shredded Coconut: Make sure you get toasted shredded coconut for optimal nutty flavors!

Wet Ingredients

Water: Just a little splash of water to make the dough nice and soft.
Oil: Both olive and oconut oil are used they are both great for the dough and chocolate layer!
Vanilla Extract: What would this pizza be without the vanilla? Pure vanilla extract is used to give this pizza aromatic qualities and sweet flavors.
Banana: Make sure the banana is firm so it is easy to slice. Bananas are rich in Vitamic C, potassium, fiber, and are great for whenever you need a boost of energy. We like to use organic bananas!

📖 Variations

  • Flour: Instead of using whole wheat flour, use 1:1 gluten-free flour. We have not tested this pizza dough with almond or coconut flour.
  • Fruit Pizza: Instead of banana slices, use fresh apple or orange slices! Grapes, kiwi, mango, raspberries, blueberries, and of course, strawberry slices, will also taste delicious.
  • Sugar: Instead of coconut sugar, use your other favorite low glycemic sweetener like monk fruit or date sugar. If you are not refined sugar-free, then use granulated sugar, powdered sugar, or brown sugar. You can even add regular chocolate chips or white chocolate chips on top for more decadence!
  • Protein: Add some protein to this pizza by adding peanut butter, almond butter, or your favorite cashew butter.

❓Recipe FAQs

Where does Nutella pizza come from?

Nutella pizza emerged in the 1990s in Italy when crepe stations became popular. Nutella wanted to increase exposure for their brand and provide a different Italian dessert option than the traditional gelato, and that's how the idea of Nutella pizza came about!

Is Nutella healthy to eat?

Unless you are making your own Nutella at home, store bought Nutella is not healthy to eat regularly because it is loaded with refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and other processed ingredients. Homemade nutella is much healthier, and you can make it refined sugar free (or even completely sugar free) since you can control the ingredients!

How to Store this banana dessert pizza

Chocolate Hazelnut Mixture: Store the excess chocolate hazelnut spread in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to one week.
Pizza: Wrap each slice in plastic wrap, then store the leftover pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.
Reheat: You can reheat in the oven at 350 degrees, or in the microwave until the pizza is warm, but you can also enjoy it cold! Both options are great.

💭 Expert Tips

  • The dough can be made in either 2×8-inch pizzas or one large pizza.
  • Don't overwork the dough or it will become tough.
  • Allow the dough to rest, covered, on the bench before rolling out.
  • Make sure the bananas slices are not too soft or the pizza will be mushy.
  • If you don't have time to make your own pizza dough, you can also use a store bought fresh dough like the Trader Joe's whole wheat pizza dough.
