Nu-Goth: How to Pull Off That Look

By Ninja Cosmico

Hey there everybody! Today we are going to talk about Nu-Goth, the darker new sister style of Pastel Goth,

But first, we need to go back to the basics; where did the Gothic scene come from?

Well, Gothic takes its roots in the 70's within the Punk movement. Musical artists like Robert Smith from leaded the movement in its beginnings.

Joy Division also made a strong influence within this subculture. But also Nine Inch Nails & Marilyn Manson helped to popularize this genre in the 90's with their catchy Electronica + Heavy Metal music style.

Within the movies and TV shows we can see its influence in the old television show " The Addams Family" with their unique graveyard look in dress, along its respective remake in the movies with Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams.

Added to that was the popularity of "Beetlejuice" & "Edward Scissorhands", created by Tim Burton, who really pushed the Gothic aesthetic into the mainstream and made it chic. More recently within the mainstream goth popculture, we can see the character Lisbeth Salander based on the novel "The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo" that also spawned two movies, a Swedish one and another remade by David Fincher, both exhibiting a new Gothic millennial style.

What is Nu Goth?

Now getting back to the style of Nu Goth, we can see the Gothic influences in its roots, but also a mixture with various other current tendencies. Such as Kawaii accessories, and more.

Nu-Goth: How to Pull Off that Look

features a combination of both Gothic and Soft Grunge influences with a splash of Japanese Gothic. Unlike the purely black Gothic style, this style sometimes may include dying the hair silver, lavender or light pink. Its unique features such as upside down crosses, John Lennon style round glasses, doc martens, bondage inspired harnesses and black lipstick make it somewhat frazzled but wearable.

It may appear as hipster style, but the main characteristics of this style are clearly underground in nature. Felice Fawn, an Internet celebrity of Tumblr notoriety, has added to its popularity as a fashion trend. Bunny Meyer, a popular YouTuber, has also added to the popularity of this fashion. Looking at some of these trend setting fashions on Pinterest will give you a detailed picture of its makeup.

Soft Grunge + Goth = Nu Goth

For a unique, total look, begin by taking samples from Grunge fashion such as crop tops, oversized sunglasses and shorts with high waists, and add some casual Goth. We all know Goth is all about black, and guess what, this fashion trend is too! However, do you know that not only is it about black, but it is also about pink hair and pastel colors? In other words, it's also Pastel Goth! It's also about symbols, platform shoes, backpacks, denim shorts, mermaid hair, , studs, occult symbols and black lipstick. You can purchase all of these items online at Ninja Cosmico's Store.

Nu Goth Sister: Pastel Goth

This style that is also known as Pastel Goth is eerie cute with its mixture of casual Goth, grunge, hipster and some sporadic 90s fashions. This trend uses quite a few symbols including unicorns, triangles, pentacles, crosses, oversized crosses, upside down crosses and evil cats.

Even though it uses pastel colors especially in hair dyes, it still has tons and tons of black. Who knows why, but awkward hats are also part of the Pastel Goth look. Other strange fragments of the style are cheap lace gloves and arm warmers, black skinny jeans, cropped corset tops that are poorly fitted and black lipstick sloppily applied.
