Non-Toxic Cleaning Spray Recipe

By Craftycrunchymama
About five years ago, I was looking for a spray to clean my new house's counter tops that was non-toxic and didn't smell awful. I am sensitive to strong smells and figured that regular cleaners probably weren't doing anything good for my health. I did a lot of research (I don't remember all the websites I used so I can't provide links. Five years is a long time!) and came up with this great spray! I have been using it ever since and I have to say, I love it. It smells great and isn't harmful to your health.
This spray uses tea tree oil as the germ killing agent. If you haven't used tea tree oil before, please consider it. In early studies it has shown to be an antibacterial, anti fungal, and antiseptic, among other things. It kills germs such as Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and helps fight other bacteria and viruses.
*Please keep this powerful oil away from children. It is harmful if swallowed. It is safe for use on the skin, but only if diluted. Also, don't use it on your skin if you are pregnant, just in case.
For this spray you need: a spray bottle filled with water (leave some room at the top to allow ingredients to be mixed thoroughly), dish soap (or any kind of liquid soap), and tea tree oil.
To make this even more non-toxic than what I am showing in this picture, choose a non-toxic dish soap. I am using up what I have and then plan to use a healthier kind!

After you have filled your spray bottle most of the way, pour some dish soap in. I don't measure, I just use a couple of squirts. This is a very customizable recipe. Use the amount that suits your cleaning application.

Next add the tea tree oil. This step would probably work well with a dropper. Some people use it by the teaspoon, but I find that to be a little much. If I had to guess, I would say 10 drops would be plenty for the size of water bottle that I have here. I just pour a small amount into the bottle top and pour it in the water. There are no studies that show how much tea tree oil is effective so use your judgment. I judge by how strong the smell is.*I would advise against pouring it directly from the bottle into the mixture. You are likely to get too much.

And voila! A safe, non-toxic cleaning spray that can be used on counter tops, bathrooms, and much more. My absolute favorite part about this spray (besides the awesome smell) is the fact that I can use it around Baby J without worrying about the effect it is having on his health.
