Nightwear protest brings a bed

A frustrated shopper staged a protest at a furniture store after waiting two months for a bed to be delivered.

Lorry driver Phil Rudderham, 48, of Little Downham, Cambridgeshire, arrived at MFI's Cambridge store in his nightwear and got onto a display bed.

Within an hour he was told his bed was on its way and six hours after his own protest it was delivered to his home.

"The moral is take direct action and tell the media what you're doing," he said after his victory.

"I walked into the store at 1115 BST (on Friday). I was told the bed was on its way at 1215 BST.

"I then had a call from the managing director's office. A woman said 'we don't like the media and bad publicity'. By 1730 BST my bed had been delivered."

'Spent day phoning'

He added: "I paid in full on April 20. I was told I had to pay in full up front. I'd been waiting ever since. They said the computers had broken down, the bed hadn't been made.

"One thing or another. I couldn't get through to talk to anyone. I spent a whole day trying to get through at one point.

"The trouble is my good news will be somebody's else's bad news - because I'm sure I've got someone else's bed. I bet there are hundreds of people having the same problems as me."

No-one was answering the telephone at the store on Saturday.

But in a statement MFI told local newspaper the Cambridge Evening News: "MFI takes customer service very seriously and we're sorry Mr Rudderham has had these problems."
