The long-awaited second trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 fell during Saturday DC FanDome, DC Comics' first virtual fan convention. The trailer gives fans a good look at Kristen Wiig's wild-haired look and animal-themed costume as the villain Cheetah, and even features Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) modeling parachute pants and a starry belt bag.
The film shifts the action from World War I 2017 to the colorful 1980s, and the trailer features classic retro fashion as well as Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) battling cheetahs in the White House.
Gadot returns as an Amazonian superhero for the sequel, and Pine's Trevor returns as well, though he believed to have died during the 2017 film. He's a bit confused about the time jump from his time in World War I, wondering about Wonder Woman's ability to stay youthful (getting used to it), and surprised by inventions like radar and parachute pants. ("Are all parachutes falling now?" Asks a Trevor with wide eyes.) The film also shows Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord, Robin Wright as Wonder Woman's aunt, Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as her mother Hippolyta. Director Patty Jenkins is back for the new film too.
During the DC FanDome panel, cast members and Jenkins remembered the fun on set, including a fight scene where Wiig's hair got tangled in Gadot's costume.
Fans, including tennis star Venus Williams, asked questions. Williams wondered who would win in a tennis match between Wonder Woman and Cheetah, and Wiig insisted it would be her character as Wonder Woman would likely have a gold racket that would be too heavy. The cast also praised fan art and cosplay photos, and in one highlight, Lynda Carter from the 1970s Wonder Woman TV show appeared to be chatting with the cast.
"You are a real wonder woman," Gadot said to Carter. Jenkins said the cast talked about Carter every day while they were making the film. And Carter herself said that her own daughter revealed that she only understood why the mighty superhero was important to so many people when she saw Gadot in full costume.
"We're not here to reinvent Wonder Woman," Jenkins told Carter. "We're only here to take the torch and pass it on."
The first trailer came out in December showing Wonder Woman horseback riding as well as some of her doomed friendships with archaeologist Barbara Minerva who becomes a Cheetah.
The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in late 2019 but has been postponed until 2020 and then delayed again until Coronavirus pandemic. The studio is now hoping for one Release date October 2nd.
Most of the first film was shot during World War I, but the sequel made its way into the Cold War 1980s, with the bright colors and shopping malls of that decade playing a role.
