Nature and Notebook.

By Ashleylister @ashleylister

This week’s theme is “indulging in poetry writing exercises”. Now, folks, I’m afraid what I’m about to write probably will be a disappointment and a cliché, but I honestly haven’t ever done one or written one. Pretty crappy for one who calls themself a writer and a poet I know. My way of writing is entirely chaotic and jumbled and it always has been. I’m sure I can be of no help to readers on this blog for this topic. The only advice I’ve bothered taking, and I type this with gritted teeth in hopes I don’t sound arrogant, is Stephen Fry’s in his book “The Ode Less Travelled” where he pointed out taking a notebook and pen EVERYWHERE with you is damn handy. It became pretty obvious to me after I’d read it and felt a little silly for not always doing so. As I said, chaotic and jumbled.
My only exercise is to write down everything; each little word and sentence and thought that creeps into one’s mind at the sight of a night’s sky, or when simply sat with a loved one, or when you’re bored at work or in class. My inspiration often comes when I’m very emotional in some respect, or I’m out walking in the woods or by the sea. But that doesn’t work for everyone. My advice; notebook and nature. My warning; don’t limit yourself in looking for inspiration. Oh, and carry a notebook. But I think you’ve got that now.
