Natural Skincare Tips for Travellers: What the Beauty Experts Say (Part 2)

Hello Sunshine! I woke up this morning to a rainy & gloomy day, not exactly the kind of weather that got me excited. And I asked myself, what makes me a happy on a day like this? I walked to my kitchen pantry, grabbed my grounded organic coffee, coconut oil and brown suagr and whipped together a DIY body scrub (recipe here) for a skin-pampering session. Just because nourshing my skin in the most natural way brightens up any day without fail! Apart from having silky skin, travelling also lifts my soul BUT hang on - travelling and keeping your skin happy sometimes might sound very much like mutually exclusive - you can only have one or the other! Does anyone else feel like this? Low humidity in cabin, germs on board and lack of proper sleep... you name it. All the beasts that mess with our skin conditions when it comes to air travel and living on the road. Fear not, my darlings. We've asked our 6 beauty experts including Pippa from Ella Bache and Irene from Noursihedlife.com.au the all important question, 'What is your best natural skincare tips for travellers?'. Last week we chatted with the mega babe MUA Sheri Vegas to reveal some of her best kept travel beauty secrets, here are what the other experts have to say:

Save space (and time!) by investing in a great, natural all purpose balm that you can use on dry patches over your face and body or as lip balm, eye cream or after sun treatment. Your skin will not only love you for it but it will reduce the number of products you have to carry around!

Cleanse! Long days walking, sightseeing etc usually in climates your skin isn't used to can not only cause a buildup of impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Make sure you cleanse twice daily, a natural oil cleanser is a great option and it will also help combat any dryness.

Wear a natural sunscreen daily. When travelling, you usually spend a lot more time outside that you would normally, making it even more important you protect you skin from sun. Even in cold climates your skin can still suffer from free radical damage!

We all love to travel to warm destination and spend days lounging by the resort pool sun baking. It is so important to reapply your sunscreen regularly especially after swimming however an oversight can happen and you end up burnt! Often when traveling you are limited in what you have on hand when misfortune happens. There are a few simple remedies at your finger times that do work.

Our favorite is to take five tea bags (recommend earl grey) and place into a bowl and soak in warm water until cool. Once cooled down take the tea bags out and put bowl in fridge to really cool down. Once cold get cloths and soak in the water and gently apply to burnt area on skin. Don't wash the solution off for a while - we recommend if possible to keep the solution on over night and wash off in the morning.

Hydrate from the inside out with flightamins, add the sachet to water before a flight for a boost of hydrating electrolytes and vitamins. Take care of your wellbeing, I can't live without Perfect Potion Jet Set aromatherapy mist to calm the dazzled nerves and keep stress at bay. Spritz during and after the flight to combat topical water loss, I use Eminence Organic Skin Care's Neroli age Corrective Hydrating Mist, it's the extra boost of hydration and anti ageing ingredients .

Drink a lot of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine will both dehydrate you further, so politely decline the free vino and request some H2O. Wash and moisturise your face before and during the flight, using a deeply hydrating moisturiser. I would recommend Ella Bachés Fruit d'Eclat a la Tomate Bio. It's made from natural ingredients with organic tomato and contains a mix of potent antioxidants including vitamins B, C, D and E that results in a brighter, clearer complexion when you land at your destination.

Pippa Hallas - CEO, Ella Bache

Always keep your skin hydrated to help balance the skin's moisture levels by applying a soothing, rose-based mist. such as Surface Skincare's organic rose maroc purifying toner which is highly hydrating and non-irritating.

Ensure you board without make-up or remove it right after take-off to allow your skin to breathe throughout the flight. Cleanse your skin using a natural cleanser, avoiding harsh ingredients that may dry or breakout the skin. Look out for convenient cleansing towelletes that contain tea tree oil, which have natural anti-bacterial properties to help combat breakouts.

If you're on an overnight flight, apply a serum that will provide the skin with additional moisture throughout the flight.

Before disembarking, if you're applying make-up, a light mineral-base make-up is suggested. Remember to cleanse prior to applying make-up, by spraying a rose mist toner and wiping the residue with cotton pads.

Hydration is key so remember to continually drink water or herbal teas while on the flight. Caffeine is highly dehydrating so avoid this at all costs until you reach your destination.

Pre-empt the freak out - create a simple homemade mask the night before with some coconut oil, oats and manuka honey.

Use a calming cleanser as harsher products can strip your skin of its moisture before you even arrive at the airport.

Remember that nearly every surface in the cabin is exposed to bacteria, so try not to touch your face without washing your hands.

Last but not least, after flying use a gentle scrub to remove any bacteria and dead skin build-up from the flight.
