My Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Start a Blog Today

By Bren @Virtual_Bren

Trust me, blogging isn’t for everyone. However, unless you try it, how will you know?

1. Building Friendships

One of the first things I noticed when I started blogging, over 6 years ago, was the relationships or friendships I was making. These people whom I never met in real-time became my very close friends. I confide in them. Vent to them. Cry to them. They are there when I need someone most.

A lot of them have become not only my blogging posse but real-time friends who I’ve spoken with on the phone, held video chat sessions with, and do plan on meeting in person someday.

The relationships that are built by commenting and sharing on someone’s blog are ones that can last a lifetime. These friendships become your support group, a tech group, and a brainstorming group of people whom you trust.

If you lack friends in real-life or are disabled and cannot get out of your home, this is a way fo you to make friends and not be so alone in life.

2.  It’s Therapeutic

Face it, the world is definitely a whackadoodle nowadays. It truly is crazy! Regardless of what is going on within the Government, the Media, and Politics, there may also be something that is happening in your personal life. Things you can’t discuss with family members or friends.

A few years back, I had some marital problems. I was devastated and fell into a depression. Thankfully, I’m a pretty open person and decided not only to write an ebook about it (and yes, it sucked), but I blogged about it. I gained support through my blogging friends. I also felt better sharing my experience because I was letting out my feelings. Unknown to me, there were others who were going or had gone through similar marital issues.

Building Friendships One of the first things I noticed when I started blogging, over 6 years ago, was the relationships or friendships I was making. These people whom I never met in real-time became my very close friends. I confide in them.

It became therapeutic. I wrote about my feelings. What I did and how I learned to trust again. That blog is no longer active and partly because since I have moved on, I chose not to relive it over and over again.

When I had my first mammogram scare, I blogged about it. I received so much support and encouragement, I was overwhelmed.

When I blogged about my first experience with being diagnosed with skin cancer. My blogging friends came to my rescue and offered words of inspiration.

I’ve made it through some pretty tough times through blogging with the aid my blogging community.

3.  It’s Free

Regardless what anyone tells you, Blogging can be Free. There are platforms like Blogger.com and WordPress.com that allow you to blog for free*. Mind you, there are some restrictions and you can upgrade by paying. But you can start for absolutely Free!

Even if you don’t know where to begin, there are people like me who have written tutorials on how to start. A lot of these articles on using WordPress.org (not to be confused with WordPress.com), but because I like WordPress.com (free) so much, I even wrote a tutorial on How To Create Your First WordPress.com Blog.

But don’t fret! Even if you don’t understand my easy how to get started, I can still assist you!

Still Not Sure Why You Should Start A Blog

There are a bazillion other reasons why I think you should start a blog, but don’t take it from me. Google a subject and just see how many blogs pop up in your search!

Mind you, blogging can be tedious and time-consuming. If you want to know more about what to expect, check out my You Want To Create a Blog, Now What? post. It’s a great article on the Why Do I Do It and Where Do I Do It.

Blogging Isn’t For Everyone

If you start a blog and decide it’s not for you, what have you lost? Using a Free platform, the only thing you’ve lost is the time you put into it. However, is it really lost? I don’t think so. I believe you had an experience, you tried it, and found out it wasn’t what you thought. But don’t give up so easily.

It takes:

  • creating your content
  • creating your images
  • promoting your content
  • building a community of friends
  • commenting on other blogs
  • sharing other bloggers content

Despite what may look like a tedious list, it really is a lot of fun!
