More Cycling Safely Stuff

I’ve been talking to Natt again – he has a real ‘thing’ about cycling safely and because I like him, I’m passing on his words of wisdom.

I would also like you to enjoy a happy and enjoyable cycling holiday in Steiermark too.

So here goes!

The off-road cycling code

  • stay on trail – plan your route in advance and stay off footpaths. Using the designated cycle trails which are clearly marked is perhaps the best plan, especially if you don’t speak Bavarian, Slovenian or Austrian…. that way you will always arrive somewhere without having to ask directions, rather than at a dead end in a ditch! And the cycle trails are designed to showcase the very best of Austria’s (and Steiermark’s) attractions, as well as provide safe cycling fun;
  • give way to horses, hikers and walkers – try to make sure you are heard when riding up behind anyone. A universal ‘hallo’ should do the trick and gain attention if the unsuspecting ‘quarry’ isn’t paying attention to what’s happening around them. It’s a good idea to keep to the right of anyone approaching you from the opposite direction -it avoids too many collisions! If  nothing else, it’s courteous and Austrian’s place a high value on good manners;
  • ride only in small groups – 5-6 cyclists together is an awesome sight. More than that and it becomes positively scary for horses, hikers and walkers – with the attendant increase in risk of accidents occurring;
  • be kind to birds, animals and plants – many of the species you encounter will be protected. There are very clear preservation policies in place to keep the area as natural as possible. Please help maintain this;
  • prevent erosion – the majestic massifs are a wonder to behold and have stood the test of time. Help keep the cycle trails and paths in the same peak condition by avoiding skidding and locking your wheels when breaking, so that they last as long;
  • be tidy – Austria (and especially Steiermark) is a very eco-conscious place. Take all your litter back to your accommodation and dispose of it in the appropriate recycling facilities. The forests of the area are of ancient times and very carefully managed. Help keep them for future generations to enjoy by not creating a fire hazard.
Enjoy your cycling Try not to get annoyed with anyone…. it never solves a problem!
