Microsoft Unveils Windows 10 – One OS for PCs, Tablets and Phones

Posted on the 01 October 2014 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

“Windows is at a ‘threshold‘. It’s time for a new Windows. This new Windows must be built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world,” Microsoft’s Terry Myerson wrote on a blog post. “Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows.”

No matter if your device has a 4-inch screen or an 80-inch screen, or works with touchscreen or keyboard and mouse, Windows 10 will work the same across all devices. And it is not just about the User Interface either. Microsoft aims to build “one product family” where you can use the same app across all your Windows 10 devices, opening up a door to an exciting universal app platform. Lets take a look at some of the new features of this new OS.

We Missed You, Start Menu

The good old start menu makes a come-back in the Windows 10 with a few new improvements. The new start menu includes a section for Windows 8-style customizable live tiles so both Windows 7 and 8 fans can feel right at home.

Finally, Multiple Desktops

One of the reasons I loved Linux so much was its multiple desktops feature. Microsoft is finally bringing this feature to Windows. On Windows 10 you’ll be able to manage multiple desktops to work and easily manage several different apps at the same time.

The Future of Apps

Windows 10 takes the new line of Modern apps forward. Desktops will have access to these universal apps through Windows Store and they will work in windowed-mode, just like any other app.

Four Apps Snapped on the Same Screen

New improved Snapped features now lets you open and run up to four apps, snapped on the same screen. Multi-taskers will definitely love this new feature.

Microsoft is still polishing up the new Windows 10, and expects to ship it out sometime in 2015. Until then, the Preview build of the OS will be available for testing. Check out the video for the official introduction.
