With only months away from its highly anticipated Windows 10 operating system release, Microsoft has announced the next-generation Surface tablet, Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3.

Surface 3, priced at $499, looks the same in design perspective. However, the tablet has been radically improved to run full 64-bit Windows 8.1, unlike its predecessor which used Windows RT. And users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free when it’s available.

Surface 3 also gets powered by Intel’s latest Quad-core Atom x7 processor, which is quite an improvement compared to ARM chip-powered Surface 2. This allows the device to smoothly run high-end apps such as Adobe Photoshop, Google Chrome and even 3D modelling.

“When we developed Surface Pro 3, we set out to design the tablet that can truly replace your laptop – even your high-end laptop,” said Panos Panay, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft.

Surface 3 also includes 2GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and 10.8-inch screen with 12-inch screen for Surface Pro 3 with 4G LTE and Surface Pen support. 3.5MP front-facing camera and 8MP camera on the back can both capture 1080p video.

Surface 3 will start shipping on May 7.
