After a successful run spanning almost 10 years, The Golden Mickeys, one of the beloved shows at Hong Kong Disneyland bade farewell last July. But Mickey Mouse and his friends have set themselves out for a new adventure called Mickey and the Wondrous Book in time for the resort’s 10th anniversary. I was lucky to have attended the premiere recently. Read more…

Mickey and the Wondrous Book at Hong Kong Disneyland

Mickey and the Wondrous Book is the new Broadway-style revue shown daily at Hong Kong Disneyland. According to our friends from the resort:

The 28-minute new stage show opening at Disney’s Storybook Theater begins with Mickey Mouse and Goofy discovering that a wondrous book exists in a library.  To their astonishment, when the book opens, the warm-hug-loving snowman Olaf falls out from the pages.  Mickey immediately comes to the realization that he needs to help Olaf return to his story before he melts. Mickey, Goofy and Olaf embark on the quest together – on a journey that’s filled with endless adventures.

The show features seven Disney stories—from the classics, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin to more recent films, Tangled, Brave, The Princess and the Frog, and Frozen. Undoubtedly, young ones and grown ups alike will find themselves singing along to the songs, as these include such memorable hits as Bare Necessities, Part of Your World, and Let It Go.

With its 23 costume ideas, 63 pieces of instruments, and impressive animation visualized using LED technology, the show, I thought, is a visual and aural spectacle.

But what made the show more relatable to me were the Filipinos who form part of the 70 world-class talents of 10 nationalities performing. Foremost of them are singer-actor Gian Magdangal and singer-thespian Raki Vega who open and close the show with Happily Ever After, Hong Kong Disneyland’s 10th anniversary theme song. The show, by the way, is directed by Rony Fortich, a Filipino who has served as the theme park’s musical director since its opening.
