Men’s Fashion Week: ‘Avant Garde’ Or Just Wacky?

By Wildchildmedia @wildchildmedia

Some questionable sartorial choices were seen at Men’s Fashion Week this year, but is it all just down to personal taste? Will we really start to see men in the street wearing beer-mat skirts? The jury’s out on this one.

Starting off the bizarre rundown is quite a tame ensemble in comparison. ‘Wallpaper prints’ seen at Alexander McQueen. Although the outfit comes in suit-style form, I doubt head-to-toe print is a look that many men will be stepping out in, as bold and eye-catching as it is.

Bringing new meaning to the word ‘androgyny’ was JW Anderson. Models went down the runway in tube tops and peplum-hem shorts. The block color of this creation (camel brown) makes the outfit look decidedly like a women’s dress, not to mention the frilly peplum hem. This seems to be the next step up for modern ‘metrosexual’ men everywhere.

Street style accessories were given a DIY twist at Nasir Mazhar, where models in 80s-style tracksuits and trainers were topped off (literally) with a bucket accessory on their head. The bucket, strangely made to look like a face, complete with a hat on the top, may just catch on as the next big thing in men’s headwear. It’s definitely an acquired taste.

Proving that men are certainly a resourceful kind was Martine Rose, with models seen wearing a beer-mat skirt. Now this is an acessible trend for the majority of men, but in no way do we advocate stealing beer mats from your local.

Trans-seasonal dressing was taken to extremes at Sibling, with bare-chested models sporting giant knitted headwear. The leopard print trousers may get their day, but the astronaut-esque knitted headpiece might be a bit too cutting-edge for Topman just yet.

To conclude this chart of strange attire is my personal favourite: ‘plank hats’ seen at Craig Green. An interesting formation of planks of wood worn on the head, completely covering the face. Gone are the days of having to go out with a humongous spot eruption, or braving work with a hangover… this plank hat will ensure that no man has to put up with this sort of embarrassment again. Think of the splinters though!

Yes, these creations look ridiculous to most of us and I’m sure there are many men who wouldnt dream of stepping out of the house with planks of wood on their head, but is this really the future of men’s fashion? Time will tell.
