Perched on a sunny corner of Frith Street in Soho is the new Peruvian-Japanese restaurant, Chotto Matte. The newest venture of Kurt Zdesar (the man who brought Nobu to London and set up the Ping Pong dim sum chain), I was kindly invited over to sample their new brunch menu and of course I couldn't pass that up, bringing Aisling along for the ride.
The brunch menu offers up a selection of fusion takes on traditional brunch with some hearty sangucheria (a Peruvian sandwich). detox juices and an extensive range of teas and coffees. Perfect. The restaurant is really easy to find and has black exteriors with al fresco seating, full French windows and a jazz band that plays every weekend. It's quite a loud and uptempo affair so probably one to avoid if you're hungover!
What We Ordered:
  • Lychee juice
  • Apple juice
  • 2x The Anti-Oxidant One (detox drinks)
  • Pork sangucheria (slow braised, grilled pork with sweet potato, baby gem, ajo amarillo, salsa criolla and cassava fries with smoked panca dip)
  • Cheese omelette
  • Chicken and apricot sausage
Aisling and I got fresh lychee and apple juices to combat the London heatwave. Brunching and having a really in-depth catch-up is thirsty work! We also ordered two of their Anti-Oxidant One drinks, a yummy blend of carrot, apple, celery, ginger and lime. I'm usually a wimp when it comes to drinks like these, but it was surprisingly good with a nice ginger and lime kick.
Onto the food! Aisling and I were completely spoilt for choice. Everything on the menu looked incredible and I'm probably going to have to head back to try somethin' else soon. I opted for the pork sangucheria, which was one HUGE sandwich. Slow braised pork with sweet potato, baby gem lettuce and some amazing salsa sandwiched between two grilled slices of bread. The pork was perfectly tender with a little bite to it and was full of flavour, set off perfectly by the salsa. Aisling said her omelet was really good too, and the chicken and apricot sausages were a nice twist to a classic brunch.
We both had a great time catching up over real good food and will definitely be back again to sample more. Who can pass up Sunday brunch followed by a session at the shops?! My only qualm is that the food took a little while to arrive and I'd love to see more Japanese brunch offerings. I'm really curious to try their evening menu too for a flavor of the Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine.
Brunch is available from 11am-3pm at Chotto Matte. Prices are in the mid-expensive spectrum.
Disclaimer: I was invited to sample the menu as a guest of Chotto Matte and therefore did not pay for this meal. Opinions remain honest and all words are my own.
