Lipton Affair with George Young @ Mount Pleasant

By Dariel

21 Aug 2014 – I had the privilege to be invited to an event organised by Lipton Singapore. I was there to learn how to make cocktails and mock tails using Lipton’s range of tea products. It’s not any special tea but the usual Lipton tea you see in supermarkets, concocting them into refreshing and thirst-quenching cocktails and mock tails. I couldn’t believe my eyes when we were taught step-by-step by Fly Entertainment artiste, George Young.

In the main hall, there were other ready mixed cocktails for guests to drink especially coming to the event on a hot day at Mount Pleasant. They were Lipton Sunshine Serenade and Lipton Dark Passions. Though I didn’t try the Lipton Sunshine Serenade which was made of fresh lemon juice, Orgeat syrup and Lipton’s Peach Mango Tea, I think it tastes equally well with the Dark Passions I drank. Made with fresh lemon juice, dark rum, sugar syrup and Lipton’s Passion Raspberry Tea, the cocktail is a “Ahhhhhh……” and the flavour of the dark rum infused with Passion Raspberry tea, it was “Ooohhhhh…..” and together with crushed ice, the cocktail crushes away the heat from the hot afternoon that day.

Hosted by Jean Danker, the event started straight into making the cocktail and mock tail and they are the Lipton Fruit Tea Red Crush and Lipton Maple Twist. This is the first time I am doing this, mixing cocktails and even holding this metal bottle mixologists always work with. I thought I better learn this whole Lipton affair so I can mix for my family and friends after the event in the future. Pay attention, Frog!

Ahem okay and so the mixing tools and ingredients needed were laid out neatly on long tables covered in white tablecloths. The whole setup was done beautifully by Lipton Singapore with a pretty posh setting. We were grouped two to a table and began our mixing! I got to pair up with another blogger and we both successfully made the Lipton Fruit Tea Red Crush and Lipton Maple Twist. It was a lot of fun during the process as all at the table – bloggers, media and artiste, were busy referring to the recipe and looking out for the respective ingredients, especially the part needed 8 grapes and all started counting the bunch of grapes. 1..2..3..4..5….

And ya, learned that the pounder was meant to pound on the flat side and not the rounded side like you will do to make belachan with the stone pounder. Hahaha!! Aiyo so malu…..

The mixes were not difficult to make and there weren’t many ingredients involved and the ingredients are those easily available in local grocery stores.

George Young was at the counter explaining and demonstrating the concoction. Our table somehow were steps ahead of him – only our table started shaking our shakers with the “clak clak clak” sound while the rest were still putting in the ingredients. And here it is, proudly presenting our hard work especially for the Lipton Maple Twist which you have to shake doubly hard to make the foam out.

There are altogether 16 unique cocktails and mock tails recipes that George Young and the Cufflink Club collaboration created. This was done to introduce to consumers a new way to look at tea and same time a unique different way to experience tea. No longer it is the usual boring tea-in-the-tea-cup tea but rather now, you can make use of them to mix cocktail and mock tail for other occasions not just tea time only.

After the event we were treated to an assortment of canopies such as Duck Meat Rice Roll and many more. At the same time we were introduced to even more cocktails such as the Lipton Orange Countea, Earl of Vermouth and the Mo-Tea-To. Remember the artiste I mentioned earlier? She is the artiste from Channel 8, Sora Ma.

The event ended with a great toast to everyone by George Young.

The Lipton Affair with George Young event gives me an eye opener that your typical Lipton tea can be transformed into amazing cocktails and mock tails using creativity. The success recipes of these drinks prove that the collaboration with Cufflink Club was a right choice for they are renowned for experimenting with unique ingredients and flavours to create distinctive and great-tasting drinks.
