I leave bright and early tomorrow morning to attend a weekend Tumbleweed Building Tiny Houses workshop near Boston.
For the longest time I have always wanted a “tiny house,” but then, as a child, I was always the one who liked tiny things. Tiny trolls, tiny animals, tiny frogs. I wasn’t much for dolls, but give me a dollhouse and a family of tiny stuffed animals and you wouldn’t have to worry about me for days. If it was tiny, I was there.
I think that my obsession with tiny houses comes from living in a large house with the 6 kids. Things get broken, toothpaste gets taken out of the bathroom (really??) and my stuff gets moved around by others so much that I don’t have a clue where it is when I need it.
I had started the countdown until the day the last child had graduated from college (8 years from now), but it looks like even those who are graduating are coming back home to roost. Although they are welcome, I have come to accept that Marc and I will never be alone in this house.
So what’s this writer mom to do?
I just want my own space, where I can sit and write, and if I put down the book I’m reading, when I go to look for it, it will be in the *exact* same location it was before. I want my book bag, not my daughter’s soccer shin guards, sitting near my chair.
I want to be able to write uninterrupted by such earth shattering questions like – “what’s for lunch” and “do you know where my black socks are?” *sigh*
What I want is a tiny house.
I’m taking the workshop to learn the beginnings. Even if I don’t build a tiny house right now, I know I’ll be able to use some of the skills I’ll be learning on the chicken coop and even in our (big) house.
But rest assured, although I know it may take a long time to finish my tiny house (heck, it might even take years), and even if it means I only buy a door handle, the building of my tiny house starts as soon as the workshop is finished.
