In the chicken world, as it is in the human world, sometimes things don’t always go as planned.
We were scheduled to get our 9 ordered chicks next weekend. It was perfect timing, everyone was going to be home, and the weather would have been a week warmer.
I would have been ready.
Last night I got an emergency call from the local feed store. They had been shipped someone else’s chick shipment and currently had 900 chicks who needed to find homes.
Right now.
Sure thing, always one to come to the aid of one in need, I grabbed my daughters and we headed down. I had ordered Bared Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, and New Hampshire Reds and while they did have the Rocks and Orpingtons, they did not have the Reds.
No problem, we picked out 3 Rocks and 3 Orpingtons (and we used feather sexing to get the girls, so we’ll see in a few weeks how accurate our sexing skills are.) I was going to leave with just the six that I had ordered but then Addy moseyed over to the crate where the Araucana babies were housed.
For those not familiar with the breed, Araucana chicks look exactly like feathered chipmunks.

What can I say? We now have 3 Araucana’s (actually to be fair, one snuck in that doesn’t really look like her sisters so I guess we’ll have to wait and see on that little one.)
We currently have 9 babies in a nursery. All full of fluff and potential -
And I’m going to be gone this weekend at a conference (see what I mean about plans?)
The kids and Marc have a long list of things they need to do with these chicks which includes playing with them, making sure they have food and water and taking plenty of photos (they’re only small for so long.)
Even though I’ll be gone for a few days and even though we weren’t expecting them yet, it feels so good and so right to have babies in the house once again.
