Layering 101

Layering 101
Well, winter has officially arrived. With two snow storms under my belt this year, these days I'm dressing for one purpose: warmth. What I'm about to tell you is not groundbreaking information, but crucial nonetheless: the key to a successful winter outfit is layering.
This is when fashion and function have to join in a happy marriage. Otherwise layering gone wrong usually results in looking mismatched, heavy, and like the homeless pigeon lady from Home Alone. When it comes to layering, I personally like to stick to these types of pieces: lightweight separates, a scarf or snood, tailored bottoms, belt, wool socks, and boots. For my top half, I start with my thinnest or longest layer as the base. To avoid looking too bulky, I do not pile on any more than three layers total {i.e. one shirt, one sweater, and one scarf}. On my bottom half, I love layering socks over leggings or skinny jeans, peaking out beneath boots. Another perk to layering is the chance to showcase contrasting colors and prints, so have fun with it. For all of you visual learners {like myself}, above are some photos showcasing how to do it right for winter. I think of it as a lesson in layering.
