Kitchen Maestro Mango Slicer _Product Review

As a lover of exotic foods, the idea of a mango slicer was kind of funny at first because anyone who loves mangos knows what a pain they are to slice. But when I found out that this thing also takes out the pit…that’s when it got my attention.

So how does the mango slicer work??

The way that it worked best for me was by placing the mango in a sideways position, and then I would push down the blades estimating (or guesstimating) where the pit is. The sharp edges will cut through the skin, into the meat, and then they separate the pit with just a good push. The part of the blade that touches the mango is the only mega-sharp part of the entire utensil.  This means that this is not an accident waiting to happen: It is an actual mango corer.

I want to say that, if you are going to carry the mango slicer to work, to please put it in a very safe, sealed container. The last thing you want to do is to reach over your lunch bag and have the palm of your hand “meet” with the bottom of the mango cutter. The blades are very sharp and they may cut you. Yes. They cut me, too. Lesson learned.

The kitchen maestro has a good name because it has mastered the shape of the mango pit, which is oval. It will not work for other types of seed, such as avocado seeds, because avocado pits vary in size and are perfect spheres, not egg-shaped like mango seeds are.

For once, there is no need to peel off the fruit, slice, then cut. This contraption does it all for you. My suggestion would be to use it on a ripe mango first, and then move on to less ripe mangos. There are people who like their mangos to keep the consistency of a peach, while others like it softer, almost of a slimy consistence because it is also sweeter.  I even know someone who eats them unripe (green) and sprinkles sea-salt on it (!!).

The handles are made of rubber and the gadget feels quite sturdy enough to take on a mango seed, of course. It will cut the mango in half, letting you enjoy it faster. It is also BPA free and safe for the dishwasher.

So, how can we make the Mango Slicer go from good to great?

Personally, the main “con” I see with the Kitchen Maestro is that I needed to adjust the way the slicer fit on top of the mango to be able to half it in one movement. This is not a real con, it’s really just something to be mindful of when slicing.  Once I had it positioned correctly, it took less than 2 seconds to cut the mango in half with no mess. Amazing!

Conclusion

I would recommend the mango slicer to take the hassle out of slicing and cutting up mangoes. It’s small, easy to clean and most importantly simple to use. Lastly, due to it’s low tech nature, I did not grumble and groan when it came time to pull it out for another use. At less than $7 per piece, I vote “YES” as a must-have kitchen item; you will make your kitchen life easier.
