Kipper : #Steelers Still Have The Most Lombardi's + You Don't Have To Be Really Good To Win The Super Bowl

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 47. I rooted for San Francisco. If they tied the Pittsburgh Steelers for Super Bowl wins, I was alright with it, because we always have next year to win #7. What i wasn't alright with were the Baltimore Ravens winning the Super Bowl, for 2 reasons..
1. The media and NFL will try to make the retirement of Ray Lewis and how he walked out of the game with a Lombardi bigger than when Jerome Bettis did it.
2. Joe Flacco winning the MVP, gives him something that as Steelers fans we can't claim for our own QB. It gives their fans something to rub in our faces and it gives the media the chance to finally prop Joe Flacco up on that "elite" chart that they've tried to keep Ben Roethlisberger off of.
Both of those happened tonight. Flacco is MVP, Ray Lewis walks into the sunset. It's fitting for Ray Lewis, he's been finding ways to walk away as a steaming pile of crap smelling like roses his entire career. The Murder charges. The Steroid usage. He didn't even get a phone call from Roger Goodell with regards to the steroids. Perhaps Ben Roethlisberger should've had the finger pointed at him for rape the week of a Super Bowl. He wouldn't have been suspended 4 games for something he was never charged with doing.
Yeah, I'm bitter. This Ravens Super Bowl win, stings like the Steelers Super Bowl loss to Green Bay.. well almost. Nothing stings as bad as Super Bowl loses.
The sting of this will wear off and the reaosn that it will do so is because...
The Pittsburgh Steelers own 6 Lombardi Trophies, the most in the NFL.
Even though Joe Flacco won a Super Bowl MVP, so did Mark Rypien and Doug Williams. The MVP is nice if you are an Elite QB already and need that edge to get into the Hall of Fame. The Super MVP, however, doesn't make you Elite. That MVP is nice, but it's not a Lombardi Trophy and so far Joe Flacco has 1 and possibly no more and Ben Roethlisberger has 2. The Pittsburgh Steelers as a Franchise have 6, the Baltimore Ravens have 2.
There's really little comparison. Until he ravens match the Steelers in Super Bowl hardware, they aren't even in the same league. That is the value of having the League leading 6 Lombardi Trophies.
The other positive to take away from this Super Bowl is that you don't have to be an elite or great team to win the Super Bowl. the Baltimore Ravens weren't a great team this year. They finished with a 10-6 Record. They had the #17 ranked Defense in the NFL. They had the #16 ranked Offense in the NFL. They had the #15 ranked Passing Offense in the NFL. They were Average across the board in a lot of categories. They just won the games that they needed to win. So, anyone that is down or disappointed or think that the Pittsburgh Steelers have a long way to go, to get back to the Super Bowl, realize that the Steelers ranked higher than the Ravens in 2012 (despite a longer list of big injuries) in Offense, Defense, Passing Offense. A team that dominated the regular Season like Denver or Atlanta didn't make it. As Steelers fans we've seen teams that dominated the regular Season not make it to the Super Bowl (2004).
There's a lot to feel good about, feel positive about going into 2013. Yeah, this Ravens win in the Superbowl sucks, but they proved that any team can win it. You don't have to be great. Win the games that you need to win and ...
...having the most Super Bowl Trophies has more bragging rights than anything the Baltimore ravens just accomplished!
