Kim Dotcom, the guy who went through a hell of lot trouble for making the MegaUpload file sharing website is back again with another cloud-based file-sharing website called “Mega“. This time he has made some improvements to avoid going back into jail.
Mega offers you 50 GB of cloud storage with every free account and protects your files, privacy better than most other services. “All files stored on MEGA are encrypted“, which means when you share a file with a friend, you have give them a unique key for the file decryption. Basically telling you that if you get caught pirating stuff, Mega got nothing to do with it. Yes, this time you’re on your own.
Only annoying thing about Mega is getting copyright warnings and terms of service agreements every where you go. When I first tried to upload a small 35kb file, without logging in to an account, nothing happened. It just prompted me to accept the terms of service agreement and then directed me into a file manager where the uploading progress never went over 0%. But, after logging in to my account I was able to successfully upload a file. So, I guess it doesn’t allow much freedom for non-registered users.
Kim Dotcom, is confident that this is going to succeed, thanks to its’ user-controlled encryption system and privacy protection. He also plans to launch more new cloud-based features in the future. Although, it will have to put up a hell of a fight to compete against other faster and much more reliable services like Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive.
