Jio Announces JioPhone : Cheapest 4G Phone

Reliance Jio, led by Mr. Mukesh Ambani, today launched the much anticipated Jio feature phone, the JioPhone in the annual Reliance AGM. The launch was so impactful that shares of major telcos and cable networks fell between 2 and 9 percent intraday after the company unveiled the JioPhone at its AGM. There had been a lot of rumors and speculation around a super cheap 4G VoLTE phone in the blogosphere since some time. In a bid to drive data penetration among the 50 Crore budget phone in India and bring digital freedom for all Indians the JioPhone was expected to the priced super cheap. However, the way Reliance Jio has priced the JioPhone it could be easily the cheapest 4G phone ever.

Since its launch, Jio has created ripples in the Indian Telecom industry. Once where 3G wasn’t accessible and economical, Jio offered dirt cheap 4G connectivity and handsets that have since changed the spectrum altogether by adding more than 100 million customers in less than 170 days, faster than even Facebook, WhatsApp, and Skype. As per the data shared by Reliance, India has become number 1 globally in terms of mobiles data consumption and may soon become number 1 in mobile broadband penetration!

The JioPhone looks like any other feature phone, however, it comes with a number of apps and features. The JioPhone will have a 2.4-inch display, a panic button, expandable storage, and FM radio, among other features. It will support dual SIM functionality and will come with 2-megapixel rear camera, SD card slot, FM radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. The JioPhone has also been tipped to come with a 4GB of internal storage, and 512MB of RAM.

Jio will soon add NFC support to the JioPhone to allow SamsungPay like tap and pay solution and will support UPI payments, and debit and credit card payments making the JioPhone, the cheapest NFC enabled phone apart from being the cheapest 4G phone.

How is JioPhone the Cheapest 4G Phone?

The “India ka Smartphone” JioPhone is effectively free. A user who plans to buy JioPhone needs to shell out a refundable, upfront deposit of Rs. 1500 or $23 for the phone and can use it for 3 years. Post which the used phone can be returned and the entire security deposit will be refunded making the cheapest 4G phone absolutely free. This will help the company to tap an estimated 50 crore feature phone users who have not been able to join the Jio 4G bandwagon because of the high costs associated with smartphones.

JioPhone Data and Calling Plans

Calling on JioPhone, like any other Jio connection, remains free. Jio has announced a special plan of Rs. 153 that will offer free voice and SMS, and unlimited data (high-speed data FUP is 500MB per day), along with Jio apps.

Users can also choose a higher plan i.e. Rs. 309 plan that offers them all features of the Rs. 153 plan and also the support for mirroring your screen on a TV, via a cable that can be purchased separately. This mirroring will even work on CRT TVs.

For users who do not want to commit Rs. 153 upfront, the company also announced two sachet packs, at Rs. 24 for two days, or Rs. 54 per week.

JioPhone release date and availability

If you’re wondering how to buy JioPhone? then the good news is that you may not need wait much. The phone will be available from August 24 from the MyJio app and Jio offline stores. The phone will be available from September to all those who prebook the phone.  Although the phone will be up for beta-testing from 15th august, users can only book it from 24th August.
