Louise Erdrich’s latest novel is quite the departure for her, but it has all of her signature storytelling and amazing writing skills. The apocalyptic air of the novel is compelling, as is the unknown future into which society seems to be devolving. A fascinating and sobering read.

Jennifer Egan’s book is a fascinating glimpse into a woman’s world in the 1940s. I was immersed into the struggles for acceptance in working in “a man’s job,” as well as the strict confines established by society and that thing called reputation. The secondary story of the New York gangster life was equally compelling, especially since it is so much more human than your traditional gangster story. I totally understand why this book is earning accolades and echo the applause. Ms. Egan made me forget who I am and where/when I was while reading. It’s the rare novel that can do that every single time you open it to start reading.
