BEIJING — Chinese state television on Sunday broadcast a startling video of a famous blogger in handcuffs, renouncing his Web posts and saying how dangerous the Internet would be if left uncontrolled by the government.

The 10-minute news report featuring Charles Xue — a Chinese American businessman and one of China’s most popular bloggers — was the latest step in what appears to be a systematic campaign to intimidate online opinion leaders against speaking too freely or critically of the government.

Early in his presidency, President Obama expressed his admiration for the Chinese system. One of his staff was forced by public outcry to resign when it became known she had called Chairman Mao a role model. Our president also expressed displeasure with the US Constitution because it was too strong on prohibiting the government from exercising power over the citizens. If we can’t replace politicians like our current president with constitutional candidates, then this blogger’s confession will be repeated in America. ~TD
