Investing to Win

This week my new investing book, Investing to Win, is out! I’m really excited about this book. It puts all of the wisdom I’ve gathered from my almost 40 years of investing in stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, REITs, and derivatives together in one place. Not only does it give you the knowledge of what the different assets are and the risks involved, the mechanics of buying and selling assets, the art of managing an account, etc…, but also the methodology I’ve developed and honed after years of trying different things and finding out what works and what doesn’t. But it goes even beyond this, revealing some of the secrets I’ve discovered on why certain strategies are the best. You could start from square one and go through the same process I did, losing decades of growth in the meantime, or you can learn from my experience and start way ahead.

Someone starting with zero knowledge of investing and the stock market could take this book and learn all that they needed to invest and do well. (Although my first book, Investing to Grow Wealthy, goes deep into the different types of assets and the risks involved, so someone with no investing knowledge might wish to get the two books as a set.) It would especially be great for someone who was in their late teens or twenties to get a copy, study, and then put the knowledge to work. It would also be useful to someone who has invested and traded stocks and assets for a while. Perhaps someone who has been trading individual stocks but really not getting the kind of returns desired. It would also be great for someone who just invests in ETFs and mutual funds, but wants to become more knowledgeable and build a better portfolio or expand into individual stocks and other assets.

Investing to Win

Book 2 in a series

I’ve subtitled Investing to Win “The Smallivy Book of Investing, Book 2,” finishing up the series that I started with my first book, Investing to Grow Wealthy. As mentioned earlier, that book gives all of the details on what the different investment assets are, how they work, and what the risks are. It also provides the ways to manage your finances to allow you to have the money you need to invest. This includes things like saving up and paying cash for big purchases rather than taking on payments so that you can save the interest. (Or better yet, invest the money you’re saving so that you make money on the money while you’re saving up!)

My second book, FIREd by Fifty, diverged from the series because the FIRE movement (Financially Independent, Retired Early) was in full swing and people really needed a sound money management strategy to reach their goals. FIREd by Fifty goes deep into cash flow management, showing how to create a cash flow plan and really supercharge your saving and investing to reach the goal of financial independence within 15 to 25 years. It also provides investment strategies for while you’re growing your wealth and then once you’re living on your on your portfolio.

This third book is all a particular investment strategy called, “investing to win.” It goes into both investing with mutual funds/index funds and using individual stocks. Most exciting of all, it unlocks the secrets to sound investing and maximizing your returns. Once you understand the secrets, the investing to win strategy presented just makes sense. It’s as if everyone were wandering around a maze, but then you found a map. You would know exactly what choices to make and which paths to take to get to the cheese at the end fastest and most efficiently.

Investing to Win

This is my first book, which covers all of the details of how to invest and the risks involved in investing in different types of securities. This is the information you need to know before buying individual stocks or even mutual funds. Even more than that, it tells you what you should be doing at each stage of life to come out financially independent before you retire. Click on the book image above to learn more about it and read an exert on Amazon.

What’s in there?

An outline of the book is as follows:

  • Chapter 1: Why and how to invest: a brief summary of why investing is useful, what the basics like stocks are, why we make money investing.
  • Chapter 2: What “Investing to Win” is: This is where the map to the maze is provided. Once you understand these analogies, you see how to invest and know why it is the best way.
  • Chapter 3: Why do stocks gain value: In this chapter, the background on how stocks work and why they gain value is presented. Understanding which companies will grow and flourish and which ones never will is critical to stock picking. Just understanding stocks is also needed to understand why index funds and ETFs grow with time and how to best utilize them in a portfolio.
  • Chapter 4: Risks and stock discount pricing: This chapter crystalizes why the investing to win strategy is the one to use. When you’re investing, you’re putting your money at risk. Stocks are priced relative to expected future prices in what is called “discounting.” Once you understand this, you’ll understand which stocks to buy and how to develop a portfolio.
  • Chapter 5: How Stocks Trade on Exchanges: Why do stocks go up and down in price? In this chapter, how exchanges work is discussed in-depth. Knowing this helps you understand why trading stocks and market timing will not work.
  • Chapter 6: Investing with Mutual Funds and ETFs: Investing with index funds and ETFs is perfectly fine if you’re not wanting to buy individual stocks. This chapter gives the basics.
  • Chapter 7: Developing a Mutual Fund Portfolio when Investing to Win: This chapter shows how investing to win with funds is done using ETFs and mutual funds with numerous examples. For many people, this will be all the info you’ll need.
  • Chapter 8: Advantages and Disadvantages of Individual Stock Investing: In this chapter, use of individual stocks in addition to mutual funds is discussed.
  • Chapter 9: Investing to Win with Individual Stock Investing: This chapter tells how to invest in individual stocks to goose your returns beyond what you can do with mutual funds alone.
  • Chapter 10: Picking Stocks when Investing to Win: Here we go into the process of finding the right stocks to buy and some tricks when buying them.
  • Chapter 11:Portfolio Maintenance and Reaping the Rewards: This chapter covers maintaining portfolios for college accounts, retirement, saving up for big purchased, and just daily expenses.
  • Chapter 12: Tax Strategies: How to plan for and minimize taxes when investing.
  • Chapter 13:Personal Psychology: We are our own worst enemies when investing. This chapter tells how to keep your emotions in check and avoid big mistakes we make when we’re greedy or scared.
