The Times of India sat down with Fadi Chehade of ICANN and conducted a small interview.
Fadi Chehade is the president and CEO of the International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an organization that allocates web addresses and assigns unique protocol numbers on the internet. In an email interview with Kim Arora, he discussed ICANN’s globalization efforts, digital surveillance and the future of the internet.
Chehade discusses DNS security, his efforts to move governance of ICANN away from the United States and what impact the new gtlds will have on India.

As the US finds itself at the center of a surveillance storm, you have taken an official stance of “accelerating the globalization of ICANN and IANA functions.” Can you elaborate on that? What resistance, if any, have you faced in implementing this so far?
ICANN’s efforts to increase its international presence have been ongoing and began long before the news reports of digital surveillance. We are and always have been an international organization that operates under the multi-stakeholder model. What that means is anyone in the world can join in the discussion and have their voice heard. The ICANN community is expansive, all-inclusive and represents the views of people from every segment — from consumers to businesses to governments.
