Indiana Blogs: Something Monumental

Indiana blog Something Monumental is chock full of artsy inspiration: photography, handmade jewelry, and DIY kind of fun!

Now? Something Monumental is more than a hobby, it’s her very own brand! She creates really cute jewelry, accessories, and art for local events and her online shop.

Meet Mandy Crandell–and get ready to get inspired by this retro-lovin’, 90′s evoking, self-proclaimed music-snob who just can’t sit still.

Indiana Blogs: Something Monumental

Why did you start Something Monumental?
I started the Something Monumental brand in 2005 during my senior year in college. I always felt a little funny about showing off my artwork, so I chose to create everything under a pseudonym. In 2009, I decided to start a blog. The original reason was to practice writing in hopes to one day write a craft book.

What about that name? Why Something Monumental?
Every day needs to be treated as though it will be something monumental. I learned that after being on death’s door 10 years ago.

What are three of your most favorite posts?

  • A Different Kind of Camp — One of my absolute favorite posts is about a nudist camp that’s right here in Indiana. Fortunately, I didn’t run into any of the guests, but the camp has something very unique that I wanted to see.
  • Recently, I shared the stories of how I became the proud fur momma to the most loyal dog: Gunner’s Story and the prettiest kitty in the world: Zilla’s World.
  • You Can’t Go Home Again — I don’t often share anything too personal on my blog, but I opened up a bit in a post this year.

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
In the beginning, I blogged to keep a record of all of my artistic adventures. Now, I blog to keep myself and others inspired.

You do photography, you do art–how long have you been creating?
Can we count drawing on the coffee table as a child?

Honestly, I’ve always been the creative type. Art was something that I had a knack for starting at a young age, but I focused more on dance. Once I was too injured to continue dancing, I put all of my energy into art.

You say you are stuck in the ’90′s. What are a few of your favorite ’90′s things?
Oh, everything! I love Dinosaur Jr, Edward Scissorhands, Empire Records, Daria, Beavis and Butt-head, Rocko’s Modern Life, Duckman, Doc Martens, and grunge music. That was the best decade.

What is your super hero weakness?
That might have to be dairy products. Sad but true.

Is there anything else that you would like little Indiana readers to know about you or your blog?
I’m always sharing DIY projects that just about anyone can do. Also, I post about restaurants and other unique spots in Indiana.

Big on Creativity
