In The News: The Secret Life of Cats Returns to the BBC

In the modern era, environmental news is high on the agenda for most organisations who report anything and everything from localised shrinking bee colonies to global climate change that affects almost everyone in the world. With so many different stories spanning the front pages and being in the headlines, we have collected a few of our top environmental and animal news stories from the week.

A couple of nights ago, sky-watchers from across the Americas and Asia were about to catch a glimpse of one of the sky's natural wonders...a blood moon. This lunar eclipse means that the moon appears orange or red which is due to sunlight bouncing off our atmosphere. Although this marvelous spectacle wasn't visible in Europe or Africa, thousands of people were able to witness this dramatic event. Click here for photos of the blood moon and for more information.

After a number of years of increased levels of deadly diseases that are affecting Britain's trees, scientists are experimenting with a possible solution. Operating under an experimental government license, trees are being injected with a concentrated form of garlic, a plant that is well known as being one of the most powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal agents in the world. Five sightings of one of the rarest migrant visitors to the UK have been recorded. Thought to have been blown across the Atlantic while on their annual migration to North America, five Monarch butterflies have been reported in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Although this is a long way off the 300 butterflies that were recorded in 1999, it is very positive news for the species in the UK. To find out more please read the full article.

And on the box this week, Liz Bonnin presents Cat Watch 2014 the follow-up series to the popular 2013 BBC Horizon documentary The Secret Life of the Cat, where 50 felines from the same village were tagged and tracked with GPS collars. The new series will track 100 cats in three distinct environments and will also reveal how our sofa buddies see, hear and smell along with looking into what they get up to outside the comfort of the house. The three part series concludes this evening but visit the BBC iPlayer to watch them all for a month.
