Others think being a stay at home mum is easy, that we sit drinking cups of tea all day. Despite what others think stay at home mums don’t watch Jeremy Kyle all day – Says Hannah

My family consists of me, husband Terry and our 2 children. We have been together 6 years and married nearly 4. We have Jack who is 2 and a half and Emma who is 8 months old.

We decided as a couple that once we started trying for Jack that when he was born I would be the SAHM. We wouldn’t have been better off as we worked it out. The money I would be earning would be going straight back on to child care and it seemed like a pointless exercise.

I also wanted to be a SAHM. I wanted to be the one raising our children and seeing their firsts. I was willing to lose all my luxuries to make this happen.

Sadly it seemed some friends didn’t agree with me, they couldn’t see why I wanted to give up “everything” to become a stay at home mum, but I have made some amazing friends since, so its been their loss not mine.

I love being a stay at home mum, I get to see my children grow, I can teach them loads of new things and see all of my hard work pay off .

I love choosing to have a “lazy day” which normally means staying home and cracking on with housework but it’s still a day home playing and having fun in between the cleaning.

The negatives of being a stay at home mum can be pretty full on at times, if you’ve had a bad night and just want quiet time and you have 2 hyper children demanding your attention, screeching and playing up because they know you want 5 minutes peace.

The rewards are endless

My son’s speech is amazing and I truly believe a lot of it’s through my teaching as I concentrated a lot on him learning words, he’s fully toilet trained too.

He is very polite and just a happy good boy, with the obvious toddler melt downs. My little girl is following suit, learning loads and very confident. It’s lovely to know I have helped them become the people their turning into.

I think the most difficult bit is realising that you can’t just run to the shops as and when you please as you have little ones to dress change and take with you, everyday normal things take a lot longer to do.

This is something I took for granted when I  didn’t have children, I would leave bits of shopping to the last minute and now I have had to learn to prepare and do things in plenty of time.

If you’re thinking of being a SAHM I would say think about it a lot. It’s a lot of time of just you and the children with not a lot of adult time, of course you can go to groups and meet people but it’s a lot of baby talk and not a lot of grown up conversation. It’s something you will get use too thou.

Also it’s a big sacrifice in my opinion. I have given up a lot of my luxuries to put myself into being a stay at home mum. I don’t regret it at all but I do miss a few things.

I have been out on my own once since having my eldest and my hubby and I have been out twice as a couple, without any children since having our eldest.

I don’t mind not having my hobbies as at the end of the day when the kids are in bed  I know that nice quiet moment is just perfect me and hubby still have our time. It’s just at home while the kids are sleeping but that’s enough for us.

We’re happy with our choice and it’s what makes our family work. I love the stress of being home with my children.
