How to Make Your Laundry Room More Eco-Friendly

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

One of the most important, yet invisible to the guests, is our laundry room. It is the room where we do our little magic in our homes, making the laundry clean and fresh again. But do we pay enough attention to our laundry room equipment and habits? Are we aware of just how much energy and water gets wasted there?

We usually just load the washer, add some detergent and turn it on and our part of the job is done. But is it? Does anyone ever think about how much water or electricity we spend on our laundry, and what we can do to minimize the impact of our laundry washing habits? And how many of us are using an eco-friendly laundry detergent instead of those highly-chemical ones?

Here are some tips on how to save water and energy using better washing equipment and detergents, because we ought to try and save nature as much as possible.

Energy efficient washing machine is a must-have

The first step we can take in order to reduce the energy consumption is to replace the old washing machine with a new energy efficient washing machine. It may seem like an expensive investment, but it will pay for itself during the time and all other reductions. Those washers use about half the amount of water compared to the old ones, so there will be an enormous quantity of water saved in years to come.

Having more efficient programs of washing, those washers also use less electricity, so they save both water and electricity. It is lots of energy saving, and we haven't even been aware how much energy is wasted every day. Saving energy will be saving money too, which will positively affect the household budget.

These changes will be also much more tender to the clothes, which will make the clothes last longer. So, in turn, we will not have to give up on that favorite piece of clothes because it lost its nice color and the material became thin and washed out.

Use smarter detergents

Smart people invented smart eco-friendly laundry detergents to help us protect nature.

There are eco-friendly laundry detergent strips. They are tender to the environment, to your clothes, and your skin. They come in a brand-new strip form. Every detergent strip is ultra-concentrated and when the washer is loaded, you just have to drop the sheet into the washer and turn it on. These strips are very easy to handle, hypoallergenic, and working in all types of washing machines

Concentrated laundry detergents require less water, but they have the same washing power as any average detergent - if not better. They also contain less carbon, so their impact on the environment is more eco-friendly. They also come in smaller packages which means less plastic and packaging waste.

You can also go one step further and use green laundry detergents. Traditional detergents are full of phosphate which is extremely toxic and harmful for both environment and water. So, to make your laundry habits even more eco-friendly, use phosphate-free detergents that are based on plant ingredients.

Nature will also be very thankful if we use natural stain-removers instead of so much chemicals.

Full loads are saving water

Another tip for both water and electricity saving is washing full loads. Store your laundry in separate hampers according to colors and fabric types, and wash only when you have a full load of laundry.

If you stick to your daily routine and take a quick but efficient shower before putting your clothes on, you can wear your clothes more than once. After taking it off, put it on a hanger and give it a few hours of breathing on the balcony, so it gets refreshed. This way you can wear them two or three times before washing, unless you make some stains, or you have a very busy day and lots of perspiration.

Let your laundry dry naturally

Dryer machines emit carbon dioxide, and life would be much better without it. It is also kind of risky putting your clothes into the dryer, because it can get damaged. Putting it on a clothing line and letting it dry naturally is a way more nature-friendly solution and the best part is that it's entirely free.
