How to Make the Most of a Small Bathroom

By Cassiefairy @Cassiefairy

Whether you’re planning a complete re-model of your bathroom or you’re merely looking to spruce up your existing design, these small bathroom tips will allow you to make the most of the space you have. Our bathroom is a little on the small-side so I’ve had to think carefully about storage and have come up with these ideas:

Cohesive Colour Scheme

Try to keep the color scheme consistent across the bathroom. A number of different colours all jostling for attention will break up the space and make it seem smaller and more cluttered. Painting the ceiling and walls the same color and matching them to the fittings and fixtures will create a unifying effect, meaning that the eye is able to sweep over the room without making too many transitions. It’s best to choose light, soft shades for the bathroom. Colours like white, cream, pale pink, mink and pale blue will reflect light and give the impression of increased space.

Showers and Sinks

When choosing a sink for a small bathroom, consider a round pedestal sink or a floating sink. These designs are known for making even the snuggest bathroom seem less cluttered. Many retailers including Utopia are coming up with new styles of fixture that are specially designed for small bathrooms, so make sure you do your research before committing to a sink, toilet or shower purchase.

A clear glass shower door is the best option for small bathrooms, as shower curtains often need to be pulled closed to dry and this tends to shut off part of the room, reducing its size further. Ask your builder to tile all the way to the ceiling in the shower area. Not only is this cheaper, but it also adheres to the fewer-transitions rule and will make your bathroom seem less busy.

Smart Storage

For shower and bath products, a recessed shelf in the shower area can be a functional space-saver, with the added bonus of looking very contemporary. If it’s possible to keep cosmetic products in your bedroom, this is a great way of cutting down on the amount of surface clutter present in the bathroom.

Mirrors and Lighting

Although it’s important to keep furniture in proportion with the size of the bathroom, this rule doesn’t apply to mirrors. It really is the bigger the better when it comes to adding mirrors to your bathroom. They will enhance the space available and make it appear much larger than it actually is. Place your mirrors as high up as possible, and add lights to the top or sides of the mirror to trick the eye into seeing the bathroom as more spacious. Make sure that you allow as much natural light in as possible. If you’re concerned about privacy, simply add a translucent shade that will still let sunlight into the room.
