Are you thinking about taking the next step in your relationship? No, not that one. A slightly smaller step – moving in together. While you are dating it can often feel like playing house if you spend a lot of time together, but you are ready for the real deal? There are a lot of things to consider before jumping into something like this. You have to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not just because it seems fun or will save you money in the long run. Really think about it and consider all these things before making that final decision. 

Why are you doing it?
It’s easy to just move in with someone because it’s convenient. You spend  a lot of time together and yes, it might save some money, but are those the only reasons you’re thinking of moving in together? If yes, you better think twice. 

Are you ready for this type of commitment?
It’s a big step to take in a relationship. Do you see a future with your partner? If there’s no long term potential, it might not be the best idea. Things could get messy fast and then you’ll have to deal with moving, breaking leases and finding a new place. Is that really something you want to go through again? Probably not because we all know how annoying moving is in the first place! 

I need my space!
Remember, it’s a totally different living together. You’re combining your lives – all your books and possessions. You both live there now and you can not escape your to your own apartment for a few days anymore. It’s also not okay to just drop off the radar because you need some alone time. Communication is going to be even more important now. If you can’t handle the idea of that, cohabitating might not be for you just yet.

It’s all about the Benjamins, baby
Time to talk money and budgeting. Are you willing to do that with each other? Are you splitting the rent evenly or are you just taking care of utilities? Can you really afford that loft apartment with in unit washer and dryer or is a one bedrom more practical at the moment? It’s time to think for two because this affects you both now. Money can always be a sensitive subject, so make sure you lay out expectations and consider everything before signing that lease!
