Know Your Shape

Firstly, it’s useful to know what shape you are, to begin with, and that way you can avoid certain styles, materials, and cuts. Your body also changes over time so what you might have been a year ago could have changed now.

So if you’ve noticed a dramatic change to you your body shape, it’s worth re-visiting the different body shapes and working out which one you are now.

Apple

With a heavier upper body, printed clothing with patterns are going to suit you the most. A v-neck can help elongate the top area, so it takes the focus away from both the top and mid-riff section of your body.

Try to avoid more figure-hugging dresses and outfits in general and aim for more flowy numbers. Flared trousers are also a recommended style of bottoms to wear to help balance out the shape of the lower half.

Pear

With a pear body shape, a lot of the focus will be on the lower area of the body. Your bottom and thighs are going to be visibly bigger than everywhere else and this a body shape that’s actually very popular at the moment.

With this shape, using the right clothing can create the illusion of an hourglass shape but more enhanced. A-lines skirts work very well, and crop tops also show that separation between the hips and upper body.

Hourglass

Cocktail dresses that cinch at the waist are going to be your best bet. You also want to find clothing that is going to show off your curves, so perhaps opt for the more fitted clothing, rather than something that’s quite loose.

If the outfit allows for it, a belt can help define the waistline even more, and v-neck, plunge, and sweetheart necklines are most suited to showing off the upper body.

Inverted Triangle

This is the most athletic looking shape of them all and mainly because it’s all about the upper area, particularly in the shoulders. You want to balance this out by adding some definition to the hips and dresses that will naturally follow the shape of the inverted triangle.

Add all the patterns and ruffles to the bottom half of your body as it will only point the broader part of your upper body if you do it the other way around.

Whatever your shape, when out shopping it’s always a good idea to seek advice from someone in the store or to take a friend who knows there fashion. Finding your own style and reflecting your personality in your wardrobe is crucial and no matter what body shape you may be, there’s always something out there to suit everyone. So make sure you know what type of body shape you are and get shopping!
